To make the best keto gravy, you need a medium saucepan, a whisk, and a gravy boat or other dish to serve the gravy with your holiday meal.
๐งพ Ingredients Used

- Chicken broth:ย You can use either store-bought chicken stock from the grocery store or homemade. You can also useย bone brothย or meat drippings from roasting a chicken, turkey, or beef roast.
- Unsalted butter:ย Itโs better to get unsalted butter so you can control how much salt goes into your gravy.
- Thickener:Xanthan gumย is by far my favoriteย thickening agentย for keto gravy. There are other thickeners out there, but Iโve found that this works the best for me. Do not omit this; it is the secret ingredient that turns watery gravy into a nice thick gravy without adding lots of carbs.
- Spices:ย Useย coconut aminos,ย black pepper,ย garlic powder, andย saltย to season this brown gravy recipe. You can useย soy sauceย in place of coconut aminos.
๐ช How To Make Keto Gravy
- Get a pan and put it on medium heat. Pour in your butter and let it melt completely.
- Next, add some xanthan gum and whisk it, so it mixes with the melted butter completely. Doing it this way will ensure your gravy is lump-free.
- Add in your chicken broth, coconut aminos, and all the spices. Whisk again so that they are all incorporated nicely.
- Let it simmer for 10 minutes on medium-high heat or until the gravy thickens. Stir every few minutes to check if the consistency is to your liking. Serve and enjoy!

๐ฅซ Storing and Reheating
Typically, you can store keto gravy in the refrigerator in anย airtight containerย for about 3-5 days. You can also preserve the keto gravy for up to four months by storing it in a container or freezer bag and freezing it.
To reheat, let the leftover gravy thaw and then reheat it in a pot over medium to high heat. Then, let it simmer for a few minutes before serving. You might have to add some broth or water to thin it out a bit.
๐ญ Tips and Variations
- Use turkey pan drippings for low carb turkey gravy, chicken drippings for chicken gravy, and roast beef drippings or beef broth for beef gravy.
- If the gravy does not thicken, add ยผ teaspoon of xanthan gum and stir till it thickens. Only use a small amount at a time because a little goes a long way.
- If you add too much xanthan gum, add a little more broth to thin it out.
- Start with โ teaspoon of salt and add more as you need. This is because the broth might already contain salt.
- In the absence of any kind of broth, you can useย bouillon cubesย to make broth. To make a cup of broth, mix one bouillon cube and one cup of boiling water. This might be saltier, so donโt add any other salt.
- Use organic vegetable broth and dairy-free butter for a completely vegan option. However, dairy-free butter tends to be salty, so donโt add any salt until you taste it.
- Unsalted butter can be substituted with olive oil or bacon fat for a yummy, savory gravy dish!

๐ฝ๏ธ What can I eat this recipe with?
This low carb keto gravy is so savory and versatile, youโre going to want to drizzle it on everything! Fromย air-fried chicken breastย toย turkey wings, keto biscuits, andย mashed cauliflower, keto gravy is a hit!ย
๐ฉโ๐ณ Frequently asked questions
Is gravy keto-friendly?
Typically, traditional gravy isnโt keto-friendly. It involves using flour orย cornstarch, which isnโt keto-friendly at all. They contain a high carb count that would kick you out of ketosis or prevent you from getting there sooner.
However, substituting some of these products with keto-compliant ones will make them suitable for a ketogenic diet. Donโt worry. Keto gravy tastes absolutely amazing, so you wonโt be missing out on anything!
Does almond flour thicken gravy?
Almond flour isnโt a very great choice for thickening gravy. It becomes lumpy, gritty, and doesnโt absorb enough liquid to work with gravy. Almond flour also gives it an almond flavor, which you might not enjoy.
Is cornstarch keto-friendly?
Corn starch is not keto-friendly as it contains a whopping 116g net carbs per cup! So avoid cornstarch if youโre on a ketogenic diet. There are other keto thickeners like xanthan gum, chia seed, psyllium husk, and guar gum.
