This mixed meat stew recipe is the perfect dish that compliments various dishes. It is packed with flavor and nutrients and low in carbs and calories.

It is also effortless to make. You just have to brown the meat, add the vegetables, and let it simmer. In a while, you will have a delicious meal that the whole family will love.

I use a large pot or dutch oven for this recipe, but you can also use an instant pot pressure cooker or slow cooker.

    🧾 Ingredients Used

    pork, beef, lamb
    • Stew beef: I use pre-cut stew meat to save time, but you can also use your favorite beef cut.
    • Pork shoulder:  I use pork shoulder, but you can also use pork butt or pork chops.
    • Lamb: I use about one pound of lamb also for this recipe. The different tastes and textures add to the deliciousness and beauty of this delectable stew.
    • Vegetables: Onion, garlic cloves, and red bell pepper.
    • Tomato sauce: This acts as a base for the mixed meat stew.
    • Beef broth: Beef broth is ideal as it will help to enhance the flavor. You can either use homemade or store-bought.
    • Olive oil: To brown the meats and saute the veggies.
    • Spices: Bouillon powder, salt, thyme, and cayenne pepper.

🔪 How To Make This Recipe

Here's how to make this easy beef stew recipe.

    1. If your meat is not cut, you will have to cut them into small cubes or large chunks, depending on your preference.
    2. In a large soup pot or dutch oven, heat the olive oil.
    3. Add the meat to the hot oil and brown them in batches, about 5 minutes on each side.
    4. Remove the meat and set aside.
    5. Add onion, garlic, and red bell pepper and stir for 5 minutes.
    6. Pour in tomato sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.
    7. Pour in the broth, add the meat and simmer on medium-low heat.
    8. Cook for 1 hour or until all the meat is tender. Tougher meats might take a bit longer to cook.
    9. Add about 1-2 cups of water as necessary.

Make it in the pressure cooker

To make this recipe in the instant pot pressure cooker:

    • Turn the instant pot to sauté mode and follow steps 1-7 above.
    • Then cook on high heat for 3 hours.
    • Let the pressure naturally release.

Make it in the slow cooker

You can easily make this recipe in your crock pot or slow cooker. Just cook on low heat for 7-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.

    🥫 Storing and Reheating

This stew tastes even better the next day! It keeps well in the refrigerator or freezer. It can be stored in the fridge for up to a week or frozen for up to three months. Just make sure to pour it into an airtight container first.
When ready to eat, remove it from the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge overnight before heating it on the stove.

    💭 Tips and Variations

    • Be sure to brown the meats in batches, and don't overcrowd the pot.
    • If you like spicy food, add more cayenne pepper or black pepper.
    • Add your favorite chopped vegetables like spinach or cabbage for a nice variation.
    • You can add bay leaves or herbs like fresh rosemary, thyme, or oregano.
    • You can also use your favorite beef stew seasoning to save time.
    • If your stew has excess oil floating to the top, use a large spoon to scoop it out.

🍽️ What can I eat this recipe with?

Mixed meat stew is versatile, and you can enjoy it in different ways. It goes best with rice dishes, but I eat mine with low-carb rice or shirataki noodles.

    👩‍🍳 Frequently asked questions

What is mixed meat stew made of?

Mixed meat stew is made of different types of meat. It usually consists of beef, lamb, and pork cooked together in broth, tomato paste, veggies, and spices. Since it's so versatile, you can customize many of the ingredients.

What is the secret to good stew?

The delicious flavor of most types of stew develops over time. Tough cuts of meat, high in collagen, require a minimum of an hour or two to become tender. So boiling the stew too quickly won't get you the desired results; the muscle fibers will become tough instead.
Instead, allow yourself at least an hour to let the stew simmer and the flavors come together.

What gives beef stew the best flavor?

First, it is vital to choose the right cuts of meat. Stew meat should be tough and lean, as it will become more tender and flavorful as it cooks. Second, brown the meat before adding it to the stew pot to create a deeper flavor. Finally, don't be afraid to experiment with different herbs and spices. The best stews are those that have been seasoned to perfection.
