Equipment Used
You need an air fryer, a meat thermometer, a large bowl, and a pair of tongs to make these air fryer buffalo wings. That's it!
One great thing about using an air fryer is that you only need a tiny bit of oil, so it is way healthier than making it in a deep fryer. Also, an air fryer does all the work in half the time and with minimal clean-up afterward!
Ingredients Used
You only need a few ingredients for this easy recipe.
- Chicken wings: You can get your chicken wings from the grocery store. You can use either frozen or fresh chicken wings for this recipe. I use the middle part of the chicken wings (wingettes), but you can also use whole wings.
- Buffalo sauce: For this recipe, I'll use my easy homemade buffalo sauce. If you prefer, you can use frank's red hot sauce or your favorite buffalo sauce.
- Spices: Black pepper, garlic powder, and salt.
- Olive oil spray: You can also use melted butter or your cooking oil of choice.
How to make crispy Air Fryer Wings
- Preheat your air fryer to 390F.
- Wash the chicken wings properly under running water. Next, pat the wings dry with paper towels. Removing all the excess water will help the chicken wings turn out so deliciously crispy.
- If you're working with frozen chicken wings, you need to defrost them in the air fryer first using these instructions.
- Place wings in a tray, and then rub them all over with olive oil.
- Mix the salt, black pepper, and garlic powder in a small bowl, then rub each chicken wing with the spices. Make sure they're all fully coated with the mix.
- Place the wings in the air fryer in a single layer and then air fry for 10 minutes. Open the air fryer and then flip each of the wings with a wooden tong. Next, air fry for another 10 minutes.
- Take out the cooked wings, and place them in a large mixing bowl.
- Pour in the buffalo sauce mixture and mix till the chicken wings are fully coated.
- Serve your finger-licking buffalo chicken wings with your favorite dipping sauce or side dish, and enjoy!
Storing and Reheating
You can store your leftover air fryer buffalo chicken wings in an airtight container for a few days.
If you want to store them longer, place them on a sheet and freeze them for about two hours. Then remove each wing, place it in a large resealable plastic bag, and put it into the freezer. They would remain fresh this way for about three months.
To reheat, air fry the wings for five minutes at 360F. After that, increase the temperature to 400F and let it air fry for another three to five minutes. Going through this process will make it juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
Again, check for doneness with a meat thermometer. A reading of at least 165F is needed for it to be safe to eat.
What can I eat with Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Wings?
These crispy air fryer chicken wings are incredibly tasty, and they make an extremely appetizing dish on their own. Enjoy these wings with your favorite spicy sauce, blue cheese dip, or ranch dressing.
You can also enjoy your crispy wings with veggies like celery sticks, broccoli, or asparagus.
Tips on making this recipe
- For best results, spray the air fryer basket with a bit of olive oil. It'll help prevent the wings from sticking to it and further crisp up the wings.
- Another of my favorite ways of crisping up chicken wings is by increasing the temperature to 400F in the last five minutes of air frying them.
- Add some cayenne pepper to make your chicken wings extra spicy!
- Let the chicken wings rest on a wire rack or a paper towel before mixing to reduce oil drippings.
Frequently asked questions
You should air fry your buffalo chicken wings for a total of 20 minutes. So ten minutes on each side would be enough to get the wings browned and ready to be eaten. Always check for doneness with a thermometer, however, to be absolutely safe.
Flipping the wings halfway would allow them to get browned and air fried evenly. An air fryer works by circulating hot air to cook or fry ingredients. When you flip the wings, you allow the hot air to reach every part of the wings.
I suggest you don't layer the chicken wings in your air fryer, especially if you want them crispy. The skin will turn out rubbery, and who wants that? If your air fryer isn't big enough for you to do them in one batch, do them in batches.
