keto buffalo sauce

I love to use this hot sauce for my keto buffalo chicken wings and my buffalo cauliflower, and they are always a favorite for game day or potlucks.

This easy keto sauce only takes a few minutes to make, and it contains zero net carbs! It should definitely be a staple in your keto diet if you love spicy foods.

What is Buffalo Sauce?

Buffalo sauce is simply hot sauce, but with melted butter mixed in. The result is a creamier, more flavorful sauce that improves the taste of everything. It especially gives a great flavor to your chicken dishes.

Is Buffalo Sauce Keto-Friendly?

It depends! If you buy your sauce from the store, it might contain other additives and hidden carbs, so check the label. On a ketogenic diet, hidden carbs can easily make you go over your daily carb intake and might kick you out of ketosis.

I prefer to make my own homemade buffalo sauce so I have complete control over the ingredients and make sure it stays keto-friendly.

Ingredients Used

ingredients to make keto hot sauce

This easy recipe uses just a few ingredients.

  • Frank's redhot sauce: This is an excellent starter for Buffalo sauce. You can get it from the grocery store or online on Amazon. This hot sauce is a popular hot sauce in the U.S made from cayenne pepper and spices. It is naturally keto-friendly and contains zero carbs.
  • Butter: I prefer unsalted butter, so I can control how much salt is in my buffalo sauce.
  • Spices: Garlic powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (optional), and salt. I like to add a bit of pepper for a hot buffalo sauce, but you can omit it if you want.

How To Make Keto Buffalo Sauce

These are the basic steps to make your own sauce.

  1. In a shallow pan over medium heat, add the butter and let it melt completely.
  2. Then, stir in the other ingredients.
  3. Simmer on low heat and stir intermittently with a whisk till the ingredients are well mixed.
  4. Let the sauce cool down for a couple of minutes, then store in an airtight container.

Storing and Reheating

You can store this low carb buffalo sauce recipe in an airtight container for up to two weeks in the fridge. Then, take it out of the refrigerator and let it thaw to room temperature before re-use.

If you must, you can also freeze buffalo sauce. Pour it into an airtight plastic bag and freeze for up to 6 months. Take it out of the freezer and let it defrost in the refrigerator, then bring it out and let it thaw to room temperature.

What can I eat Buffalo Sauce with?

This keto wing sauce is so tasty, you'll want to have it with everything, including hot wings and chicken tenders! In addition, you can enjoy buffalo sauce as a dip with grilled, fried, or air-fried chicken, fish, lamb, or turkey.

I love to use this homemade buffalo sauce with these delicious chicken wings or air fryer buffalo cauliflower.

Tips on making Keto Buffalo Sauce

  • Make sure you stir the ingredients on the stove till they are fully mixed together. If you don't, the oils might begin to separate from the sauce.
  • You can omit the red cayenne pepper if you don't want it too spicy.
  • Usually, the buffalo sauce will thicken when cooking, but add a teaspoon of xanthan gum if it doesn't.
  • You can use olive oil instead of butter.
  • You can make different variations of this sauce by adding other spices like onion powder, red pepper flakes, lemon pepper, or coconut aminos. So many possibilities!
  • Turn your Buffalo sauce into a more remarkable dip by adding some white vinegar or lemon juice for a bit of acidity and some worcestershire sauce for a great umami flavor.
