❤️ Why you'll love spicy chicken wings

What's not to love about these chicken wings? I'm a huge wing fan and could eat these delicious wings daily. They're hot enough to get you sweating!

These spicy wings are so convenient for a party or game day celebration because they are almost no-prep; simply marinate, bake, and enjoy.

To make this spicy chicken wings recipe, you'll need a large bowl, a baking sheet, and a pair of tongs.

🧾 Ingredients Used

chicken wings, hot sauce, seasoning
  • Chicken wings. Choose any wing: flats, drums, or whole wings. Be sure to thaw frozen wings before marinating.
  • Frank's Red Hot sauce. This spicy sauce is the secret to the best spicy chicken wings. It adds that classic buffalo sauce flavor and lots of heat.
  • Chicken seasoning. My homemade chicken seasoning recipe draws out the natural flavors in any chicken dish. It's made with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and more.
  • Melted butter. Marinating in butter adds so much flavor and will send the sauce mixture into every nook and cranny for the most flavorful chicken wings ever!

🔪 How To Make Spicy Chicken Wings

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Wash and pat the chicken dry. Mix melted butter, hot sauce, and seasoning in a large bowl. Add the chicken wings and mix till thoroughly coated.
  3. Line a baking tray with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on it. Arrange the chicken in a single layer on the wire rack.
  4. Bake for 40 minutes or until the chicken is as crispy as you like it. Add more hot sauce if you wish.

🥫 Storing and Reheating

Store any leftover wings in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Although I prefer to enjoy these chicken wings fresh from the oven, they can also be reheated quickly in the air fryer.

Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees and bake for 3-5 minutes until thoroughly reheated.

💭 Tips and Variations

  • Make this recipe extra spicy by adding a bit of my super spicy Pili Pili sauce. A little goes a long way!
  • The cooking time may vary depending on the size of the wings. Cook until the internal temp reaches 165 degrees F.
  • If you don't want to turn on the oven, make air fryer buffalo chicken wings instead. Just shake the basket a few times to get crispy wings.
  • Keep your wings uncovered in the oven so the skin can bake to crispy perfection.
  • Place your cooked wings on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.

🍽️ What can I eat this recipe with?

These spicy chicken wings can be a hearty snack, a great appetizer, or a main dish. For a perfect appetizer, serve these delicious wings with a side of ranch or blue cheese dressing with veggies.

Turn these classic hot wings into a complete meal by adding a side dish like my broccoli salad with bacon, keto potato salad, or keto coleslaw.

👩‍🍳 Frequently asked questions

Are spicy chicken wings healthy?

Although most chicken wings are typically pretty unhealthy, these spicy chicken wings are a great meat option for people eating keto or low-carb. Without the breading, they are naturally low carb. Plus, they are baked instead of fried, which makes them lower in fat and calories. This makes this a great recipe for wing fans trying to eat a little healthier.

Is it better to fry or bake chicken wings?

There are pros to cons to different cooking methods for wings, but I prefer baking mine. This process gives the skin so much flavor and a nice crisp skin. The marinade gets a chance to work its way into every bite. Plus, you don't need to bother with a messy deep fryer like when you make fried wings.

Should you cover wings when baking?

Keep your spicy chicken wings uncovered. Covering wings will hold in moisture, which leads to soggy skin. For crispy skin every time, you need a hot oven and uncovered chicken wings. Bake them at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes, and enjoy!
