These delicious peri peri chicken wings are perfect for your next potluck or dinner paired with your favorite side of veggies. Great for meal prep and so finger-licking good!

piri piri chicken wings ready to eat

If you love spicy food, you'll love this peri peri chicken wings. Peri peri wings are made using peri peri seasoning which is a popular African spice that packs a lot of heat. Even if you can handle the heat, you can always adjust the spiciness to your level without sacrificing taste.

I marinate the chicken wings for hours and then bake them, so there's plenty of time to go and do other things. The wings keep well in the fridge and freezer.

You can also prep these super tasty low carb wings and then bake them whenever you're ready! Prepping makes life so much easier, don't you agree?

    Ingredients Used

    chicken wings, olive oil, spices
    • Chicken wings: I used 12 large chicken wings for this. You can get fresh or frozen chicken wings from your local grocery store, but I prefer to use unfrozen wings for it.
    • Garlic cloves and onions: You can use powdered onions and garlic if you prefer, but I will use fresh, chopped ones in this recipe.
    • Olive oil: A sprinkle of olive oil will prevent the wings from sticking to the oven tray. You can also use any non-stick cooking spray. It'll also make the wings nice and crisp.
    • Lemon juice: For even more flavor.
    • Cilantro or parsley: To garnish.
    • Spices: Peri peri seasoning, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and salt. I make my own peri peri seasoning but you can easily buy a packet from Amazon.

    How To Make This Recipe

    1. In a large bowl, add the olive oil, chopped onions and garlic, lemon juice, herbs, and spices. This will form the piri piri sauce.
    2. Stir together using a whisk.
    3. Add the chicken wings and coat them in the mix thoroughly.
    4. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and marinate for 1 hour in the refrigerator.
    5. Afterward, preheat your oven to 425F.
    6. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
    7. Place a wire rack on top and arrange the chicken wings in a single row.
    8. Bake for 1 hour, flipping every 20 minutes.
    9. To be sure it's ready and safe to eat, check with a meat thermometer. Make sure the internal temperature has reached 165 degrees.
    10. Let it cool for a few minutes and top up with some extra sauce.

    Storing and Reheating

You can store your tender, juicy, and crispy peri peri wings in the refrigerator for a few days. They will remain fresh if you put them in an airtight container first.

You can also freeze them for a few months too. To do this, place them on a sheet and freeze them for about two hours. Next, take them out and place them in a sealable freezer bag. This way, they won't stick together.

To reheat, put them in the fridge overnight till they defrost. I don't recommend bringing them out of the fridge to thaw them to avoid bacteria growing on them.

Reheat them by either baking or air frying them. You can also warm them in the microwave. Check with a meat thermometer to make sure they're heated properly. The temperature should read 165F for them to be safe to eat.

What can I eat this recipe with?

Enjoy these delectable piri piri chicken wings with your favorite dipping sauce. They're also wonderful with roasted or air fried veggies. Try them with this broccoli, cauliflower, or asparagus side dishes.

If you want to have them as a full-on meal, pair these wings with some cauliflower rice, shirataki noodles, or eat it with a side of salad.

    Tips and variations

    • Try to leave enough time to marinate the wings first. The longer they sit in the marinade, the juicier and more tantalizing they become.
    • The homemade piri piri seasoning already has salt in it, so taste the marinade first before adding additional salt to it.
    • Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels before coating them in the marinade, for extra crispy skin.
    • You can also air fry this recipe at 400F for 20 minutes. Flip halfway.
    • For more spicy flavor, add some cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or more of the peri peri sauce.
    • Serve with your dipping sauce of choice.
