Tired of buying expensive (and sometimes bland) almond butter from a grocery store? Learn how to make almond butter at home using just a blender and 3 ingredients!

There are many different nut butters out there, but one of my favorites is almond butter. But as much as I love it, I can’t eat it as much as I want to because it’s not cheap, and after a while, the cost begins to add up.

Store-bought almond butter can cost anywhere from $10 – $16 for a 16-ounce jar. Compare that with the cost of a 3-pound bag of raw almonds that can give you multiple servings of almond butter. You save quite a bit of money!

And since I’m all for saving money, I started experimenting with making my almond butter at home with just a blender, and I love how it turned out! It was so silky smooth and creamy, and honestly, it tasted a lot better than the store-bought version.

Another added bonus is that you can make it plain or add extra ingredients depending on your mood. Sometimes I want it sweeter, sometimes spicier, and sometimes with just a little salt. It is so versatile!

Ingredients Used

  • Whole almonds: Make sure there are no added ingredients when you buy your almonds. I love the Wild Soil Almonds brand because I think it is really cost-effective and tastes great as well. A 3-pound bag costs $22 which can last a really long time.
  • Coconut oil: I like the creamy texture coconut oil gives this almond butter. It also makes it blend easier if your blender is not that powerful.
  • Salt: adds a hint of flavor to the almond butter.

How To Make Almond Butter from Scratch

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F (or 175C). Spread out your almonds in a single layer on a sheet pan and roast them for about 10 minutes.
  2. Allow them to cool completely, then add the roasted almonds to a blender.
  3. Blend them for several minutes until they have a very smooth and creamy consistency.
  4. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the blender intermittently to help it all come together.
  5. Add in your coconut oil and blend some more.
  6. Add your salt at the end and adjust to your taste. If you want to add in something else right at the end, feel free to do so.

What kind of blender do I use?

I use a Ninja blender, which is quite powerful, and my almond butter is ready in about 5 minutes. Another great brand is Vitamix, which is just as powerful but can be pricey.

It is best to use a high-powered blender, but you can still use whatever blender you have if you don’t have one. You might just have to take a few breaks so your blender does not overheat.

Optional Add-ins

You can make this almond butter your own by adding different ingredients and spices!

Some great ideas include:

Storing and Reheating

Refrigerate your almond butter so it stays fresher longer, and also to help reduce the separation of the oil and the almond butter. Oil separation occurs naturally with most nut butters so you just have to stir the almond butter until the oil is incorporated again before you eat it.

You can make a huge batch and freeze the almond butter. Let it thaw in the fridge overnight before you use it.

What can I eat with almond butter?

Almond butter makes such a great snack and is perfect for a low carb diet. It makes a great substitute anywhere you use peanut butter or any other nut butter. You can add it in your smoothies like in this Vanilla Chia Seed Smoothie, or add to your chia seed pudding, like this Keto Peanut Butter Chia Pudding.

It also makes a great dip for veggies like celery, beets, red bell peppers, cucumber, or zucchini. Or just straight-up scoop it into your mouth. Hey, I won’t judge!

Tips and variations

  • Depending on the type of blender you have, it might begin to heat up. If this happens, pause for about a minute or two till it cools down, then resume blending.
  • It is best to add coconut oil when using a regular blender because it helps it blend more smoothly. You don’t have to add it when using a high-powered blender, but I include it because I personally like the silky texture it gives the almond butter.
  • Don’t skip roasting the almonds; this helps it release its oils and blend to a really creamy, silky texture. It also helps the blender blades move more efficiently.
  • Make sure your roasted almonds are completed cooled before blending.
