Equipment used
For this recipe, you will only need three things: a pair of tongs, a meat thermometer, and an air fryer. The air fryer will cook the chicken wings crispy, yet moist and tender on the inside. I use a 4qt Ninja Foodi Grill, but any traditional air fryer will do if you don't have one. Some alternatives are ninja air fryer or cosori air fryer.
One great thing about my Ninja Foodi pressure cooker is that it cooks ingredients in a much faster time than with other cooking methods. It works by circulating hot air so that the ingredients are cooked inside and out. I always prefer to use my air fryer for my chicken wings instead of deep-frying.
Ingredients Used

You only need a handful of ingredients to make these delicious chicken wings.
- Chicken wings: I use eight fresh chicken wings for this recipe. You can get yours from your farmer's market or local grocery store.
- Olive oil: You can use olive oil spray or your preferred cooking oil here.
- Chicken seasoning: I prefer to use my homemade chicken dry rub made with simple pantry staples. I make it using simple ingredients like garlic powder and black pepper, among others.
How To Make This Recipe
- Preheat your Ninja Foodi. If you use a type of air fryer that does not have a dedicated 'Preheat' button, turn on your air fryer to 390F and let it heat up for three minutes.
- Thoroughly rinse the chicken wings under running water and then pat them dry with paper towels.
- Spray the wings with olive oil, then rub them liberally with the chicken seasoning.
- Place wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket or tray (depending on which type you have).
- Close air fryer lid and air fry at 390F for 15 minutes, flipping halfway using a pair of tongs.
- Check for doneness with an instant read thermometer. The internal temperature should read at least 165F for it to be fully cooked.
- Your perfect chicken wings are ready!

Storing and Reheating
To store leftover delicious wings, put them in an airtight container and refrigerate them for a few days. If you want, you can also wrap them in plastic wrap before you refrigerate them.
You can freeze the chicken wings to preserve them for longer. Freeze them on a sheet first for about two hours, then transfer them to a freezer bag or an airtight container. Then put them back in the freezer. They will stay fresh for a few months.
You can reheat them in the air fryer or oven. Make sure they're warmed through to the insides.
What can I eat this recipe with?

Tips and variations
- If you've got some time, make a dry marinade for at least an hour. It will add even more flavor to your air fryer wings.
- For pepper chicken wings, add some more cayenne pepper or chili powder, or serve with this African pepper sauce or Franks red hot sauce.
- If you use frozen chicken wings for this recipe, follow these instructions to defrost them in the air fryer.
- Make barbecue or crispy buffalo wings by dipping the wings in barbecue sauce or buffalo sauce. Serve with some blue cheese dressing or your favorite dipping sauce.
- While checking for doneness, make sure the meat thermometer does not touch the bone. Bone tends to heat up more, so you might get an inaccurate reading.
- Don't stack the Ninja Foodi wings in the air fryer so that the hot air would circulate and cook the wings properly.
Frequently asked questions
You should air fry chicken wings for a total of 15 to 20 minutes at 390F, depending on how crispy you want them to be. It is always best to use a meat thermometer to make sure it's done.
To get crisp wings from the air fryer, make sure the chicken wings are dry when you put them in. Don't stack them in the air fryer basket, but arrange them in a single layer. Air fry the wings at 390F for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
It is not advisable to put chicken wings on top of each other in an air fryer. The chicken wings need to be exposed to the hot air circulating in the air fryer for it to crisp up the skin. Stacking up the wings might prevent the air fryer from cooking them evenly because the hot air might not get to some areas. Arrange the wings in a single layer with a bit of space between them for best results.
